When dealing with urinary incontinence, there are several steps that we can take towards managing and having greater control over the problem.

As well as taking the steps necessary to start strengthening your pelvic floor, you might also want to take a quick look at your diet. In particular, the drinks that you’re consuming regularly and whether they’re irritating your bladder.

In this post, we’re going to look at the influence that particular drinks, as well as liquid in general, have on urinary incontinence.

How your drinking habits can affect bladder control

Making a few simple lifestyle changes is a healthy, free, and effective way to deal with bladder control. For example, you might want to look at your drinking habits before turning to a more extreme solution, such as surgery.

Drinking too much liquid

The more we drink the more we pee - that much is guaranteed.

If your bladder control issue is being escalated by drinking too much liquid, try drinking smaller amounts of liquid throughout the day as opposed to gulping down half a litre of water when you feel dehydrated.

It’s also a good idea to drink the majority of your daily liquids in the mornings and afternoons, and less in the evenings. Remember that liquid also comes from food! If you’re drinking a lot of liquid in an attempt to keep up with your daily needs (related to how much you exercise, for example), know that you’re getting a large amount of water from the foods you’re eating.

Drinking too little liquid

Drinking too little can lead to bodily waste entering the urine system - something that leads to a dark yellow colour. Urine of this colour will irritate the bladder and increase how often you feel the need to pee - it can sometimes feel similar to a urinary tract infection (UTI).

The 6 worst drinks for incontinence

If you’re experiencing urinary incontinence, there are a few drinks that you might want to start avoiding - or at least cutting down.

The following drinks can irritate your bladder and cause urinary incontinence to become worse.

1.  Coffee

Caffeine can increase bladder activity and increase the frequency and urgency of needing to pee.

2.  Tea

The primary culprit in tea is also caffeine, a product that can irritate and stimulate the bladder.

3.  Alcohol

Alcohol can increase the amount of urine that your body produces as well as relaxing the muscles that are responsible for bladder control.

4.  Fruit juice

Fruit juice made from citrus fruits can irritate the bladder and increase the likelihood of urinary incontinence.

5.  Fruit squash

Even when diluted with water, fruit squash made from citrus fruits can lead to incontinence. Though they’re less likely to irritate the bladder than fruit juice.

6.  Carbonated drinks

Carbonated drinks can irritate an already overactive bladder and should be avoided when dealing with urinary incontinence.
